Theoretical Scrabble, with receipts
A 2,111-point Scrabble move, and the game that gets you there
In 2008, Scrabulizer published a famous construction: play SESQUIOXIDIZING down the last column of a prepared board and score 2,044 points in one turn. It has stood as the benchmark for "strict" theoretical moves ever since, meaning every crossing word comes from one official Scrabble dictionary.
We rebuilt that board, verified it, and then did an exhaustive computer search which showed something surprising: 2,044 can't be beaten with that word. The 2008 board was already optimal. The only way past it is the attested sister spelling SESQUIOXYDIZING (a Y instead of the second I, as found in an 1870 chemistry journal). With it: 2,111 points, every other word valid in CSW21, and, for the first time for any of these records, a fully verified legal game that actually reaches the position.
The final position
Gold tiles are the record move: seven tiles down the right edge, completing SESQUIOXYDIZING and seven crossing words at once. All three triple word squares are covered, so the main word is multiplied 27 times. Dashed tiles are the two blanks.

How a legal game builds it
No previous record claim (2,044 in 2008, or 2,152 in 2010 under looser dictionary rules) ever published a route to its board. This one has a full game: one player lays the groundwork over 28 legal moves while their opponent passes, then plays the record move from the rack DGIQSXZ. Every intermediate position was machine checked: real words only, one connected board, seven tiles max per turn, standard 100-tile bag, two blanks.
The fine print
Where this sits among the known claims:
| Claim | Score | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Karl Khoshnaw, CAZIQUES, 1982 | 392 | real tournament play (Guinness) |
| OXYPHENBUTAZONE constructions, 2008–2024 | 1,786 | every word incl. the main one in an official lexicon |
| Scrabulizer / Arian Smit, 2008 | 2,044 | attested base word + official-lexicon crossings |
| This construction | 2,111 | same class as 2008, plus a full game reachability proof |
| Jeff Grant, 2010 | 2,152 | same base word, but crossings from assorted old dictionaries, not one official list |
| Jeff Grant, 1979 (retracted) | 2,278 | invented base word, later called "contrived" by its author |
The honest caveats: the base word appears in 19th century print but in no Scrabble dictionary, exactly like the 2008 record it replaces. And the game assumes absurdly lucky tile draws and a cooperative opponent. That is true of every construction in the table. The claim is "a legal game could produce this", not that anyone ever will.
